The holiday season can be a time of joy, happiness, peace, and togetherness…but along with this, it can also be a time of full schedules, short patience, and heightened tensions. Here are 3 ways yoga can help you stay grounded through this most wonderful (and hectic!) time of year.
Pranayama techniques are a great way to quickly and effectively tell our nervous systems that it is safe to relax. Try 7-11 breathing: breathe in for a count of 7, out for a count of 11. Repeat this pattern for several cycles, and feel the difference in your mind and body.
Forward folds can be very nourishing and a great way to turn your energy inward to recharge. Spend several breaths in a seated or standing forward fold, or try a hip opener like half pigeon to add in some hip opening as well, which might need it after long holiday drives to see loved ones!
In Ayurveda, often referred to as yoga’s “sister science,” winter is a kapha time, meaning it is characterized by a sense of heaviness, more moisture, and lots of cloudy days. We all know the feeling here in the PNW! Support this season in your body with lots of warming foods, such as cooked root vegetables, warm or hot beverages, and using spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Taking the time to feed ourselves with nutritious food can be a daily reminder to take time to connect with self during this busy time of year.
